Salsa On2 classes in Charlotte

Learn the New York style break on the 2 in eight-week cycles that start from your very first step. Come on your own, no partner needed.

Chapter 01

Why we count salsa On2

Salsa On2 is the timing where your break step lands on the 2 of the count, the style often called New York style. You still dance to eight beats and still step on six of them, but the weight change that anchors each phrase falls one beat later than it does in On1, and that small shift changes how the whole dance feels.

Landing the break on the 2 puts your body in step with the conga, so the dance sits inside the rhythm section instead of riding on top of it. Dancers who learn On2 early tend to phrase with the music, pausing where a horn line pauses and accenting where the percussion speaks, because the timing already points them there.

That is why every Salsa On2 class here starts with the count. Before partnerwork, before turns, you learn to hear the 2 and place your step on it. Rodrigo and Wendy teach it slowly, in plain language, so a first-time dancer can feel the pulse before the steps pile up.

How an eight-week cycle builds

Each cycle is a syllabus, not a pile of random moves. You begin on day one with the count and the basic, and every week adds to what the week before left you with. No partner is needed, because the class rotates the work so you can come alone. The one rule is firm: you start on the first day of the cycle, and there are no drop-ins mid-cycle.

The levels climb in order: Beginner, then Beginners 2, then Advanced Beginner, then Intermediate, which is Level 3. Tuesday evenings are the eight-week cycle nights, with Beginner and Beginners 2 at 7:30 PM and Advanced Beginner at 8:30 PM. Monday has the weekly classes, with Level 2 and Beginners at 7:30 PM and Intermediate at 8:30 PM.

Each class runs one hour, and times can shift from cycle to cycle, so check the live calendar before you plan your week. If you are not sure where you belong, call (704) 449-8112 and Rodrigo or Wendy will point you to the right level.

Chapter 03

What you leave with, and where to use it

By the end of a cycle you can hear the count in a song you have never danced to, find the 2, and lead or follow a connected pattern with a stranger. That last part matters more than any single turn. Social salsa is a conversation between two people who have never met, and the cycle format gives you the practice to hold up your end of it.

The place to try it is the RW First Friday Socials at The Dance Loft, which pair an intro lesson with open social dancing. Students go from the Tuesday room to the Friday floor, then back to class with a short list of things to fix. That loop between class and social is where the progress happens.

Carla Rosas is a good example of the arc. She wrote in her Google review: “In a little over a year, I went from struggling in intermediate classes at that first big event to feeling comfortable in advanced classes.” The levels exist so that kind of progress has a path to follow.
